General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

El Gobierno declara la emergencia nacional en la Comunidad de Madrid y en Ávila por cuatro incendios
El Gobierno de España ha recogido en cuestión de un par de horas el guante lanzado por Madrid. Sobre las diez de la noche y en una decisión con un solo precedente, la presidenta madrileña, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, ha pedido vía tuit la declaración de la situación operativa tres del Plan de Protección Civil contra incendios forestales en Madrid (Infoma), es decir, que La Moncloa tome el control de la situación y que asuma el mando de la emergencia ante la imposibilidad de la región de afrontar por sus propios medios la extinción de los tres incendios que asolan al mismo tiempo el territorio, dos en Villa del Prado y un tercero en la cercana San Martín de Valdeiglesias, en la sierra oeste. El ministro del Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, ha elevado a medianoche la emergencia a interés nacional en Madrid y le ha sumado la provincia de Ávila por el incendio de Burgohondo, que se dirige a territorio de la Comunidad. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero sabe que tiene dos problemas. Lo ha dejado claro en su primera intervención pública tras conocerse su condición de investigado. El primer problema es con la justicia por estar inmerso en un proceso en el que defender su inocencia le demanda una estrategia jurídica sin margen para el error. Rodríguez Zapatero ha reclamado su derecho a la defensa y la presunción de inocencia apelando a la jurisprudencia del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos. También ha denunciado la violación de derechos sufrida al hacerse pública la totalidad de su agenda. El otro problema está conectado con el deber de explicación que se impone a quien ha ostentado la presidencia del Gobierno. ¿Cómo combinar esta estrategia sin comprometer la mejor defensa del ciudadano y la reputación del hombre público? La entrevista en TVE ha sido la ocasión para intentarlo y esta encubría además un tercer objetivo todavía más exigente: contener los daños que sobre el Gobierno ha provocado la declaración de Julio Martínez atribuyéndole a Zapatero gestiones sobre el rescate de Plus Ultra.
