General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

Última hora de los incendios forestales, en directo | Los trabajos en la sierra oeste de Madrid se centran en el entorno del río Cofio, uno de los puntos críticos
Los incendios que arrasan Ávila y Madrid siguen activos este martes. Durante la madrugada, 50 medios terrestres han trabajado en una de las zonas que más preocuparon durante todo el día de ayer: el entorno del río Cofio, uno de los puntos más críticos en estos momentos y donde el lunes inquietaba especialmente el pantano de San Juan. Las labores “han sido positivas”, ha informado 112 Comunidad de Madrid en el balance de las 7.00 publicado en X. La bajada de temperaturas durante la noche ha favorecido los trabajos. “Este martes se espera un aumento de las temperaturas que volverá a marcar las labores de extinción”, detallan. Son 24 horas clave antes de que una nueva ola de calor llegue a España. Los fuegos ya afectan a más de 77.000 hectáreas. Seguir leyendo

Los incendios forestales que arrasan la provincia de Ávila y la Comunidad de Madrid siguen activos, aunque su avance es más lento. La extinción está siendo compleja y se ha visto dificultada por las fuertes rachas de viento. Tras varias jornadas de rápido avance, el domingo se lograron contener muchos de los frentes, aunque todavía se mantienen activas “varias cabezas” y los fuegos no pueden darse por perimetrados. Los esfuerzos se centran precisamente en esas “cabezas” y en intentar lograr su estabilización, al mismo tiempo que se protegen las poblaciones y se evita una fusión de las llamas de los dos grandes focos, cada vez más cerca. ¿Pacto de Estado? Una quimera en el hiperventilado clima político español. El presidente del Gobierno lo viene reclamando desde la oleada de incendios del verano pasado, lo reiteró hace dos semanas a raíz del trágico fuego que mató a 13 personas en Almería y lo repite cada día desde el pasado viernes: un gran acuerdo para hacer frente al cambio climático ante la cada vez mayor magnitud de los incendios forestales. El PP ha ignorado todos esos llamamientos y no está dispuesto a sentarse a negociar nada con Pedro Sánchez. Es más, la portavoz parlamentaria de los populares, Ester Muñoz, deslizó este lunes ideas ambiguas a propósito del cambio climático certificado por la inmensa mayoría de la comunidad científica. El caso Cerdán sobre el supuesto amaño de obra pública, que asumió la Audiencia Nacional a principios de año después de que el exministro José Luis Ábalos perdiera el aforamiento ante el Tribunal Supremo, ha experimentado un nuevo impulso en los últimos días.
