General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

Última hora del eclipse solar de agosto en España, en directo | España se prepara para un eclipse histórico: “La belleza astronómica va a ser espectacular”
España se prepara ya para un fenómeno que no se veía desde hace más de un siglo. El eclipse solar, que va a ser total en una amplia franja de la mitad norte de la península y Baleares y parcial en el resto, comenzará poco después de las 17.30 en el estrecho de Bering, entre Estados Unidos y Rusia, y será total un poco más tarde sobre el extremo norte ruso. Un par de horas después, comenzará en España, el único país del mundo donde se va a poder observar el eclipse total a placer (pasa también sobre el extremo oeste de Islandia, donde se prevén nubes, y una esquinita de Portugal). Cerca de una hora después, sobre las 20.30, la sombra pura de la luna se proyectará sobre España, dando lugar al eclipse total, cuya franja de totalidad, de algo menos de 300 kilómetros de ancho, recorrerá la mitad norte de la península hasta despedirse de España por Baleares y morir en mitad del Mediterráneo. “La belleza astronómica va a ser espectacular”, dice la alcaldesa de Cee (A Coruña) uno de los puntos donde primero se vivirá este doble anochecer. Miles de personas se han desplazado a zonas donde poder ver el eclipse total (hasta 1,5 millones de desplazamientos por carretera preveía la DGT), en medio de un enorme esfuerzo de las autoridades para evitar incendios y otras desgracias en un día de altísimas temperaturas.Seguir leyendo

Millones de españoles y turistas levantarán la mirada hacia el horizonte para ver un evento astronómico ancestral y fascinante: comprobarán cómo se va haciendo de noche en pleno día, mientras la Luna cubre completamente el Sol en el primer eclipse total en cruzar la Península en 121 años, de Galicia a Baleares, que será visible en su totalidad en buena parte de la mitad norte peninsular. Todos se arrejuntaron detrás de la mesa de oradores de la sala Clara Campoamor dejando visible la “silla vacía” del ministro Fernando Grande-Marlaska en el centro, acompañada del letrero de “compareciente”. El Gobierno afirma que irá al Senado pero no en los plazos que impone el PP
El Gobierno está obligado a atender las solicitudes de comparecencia en cualquiera de las dos cámaras de las Cortes, según coinciden los juristas parlamentarios consultados. El artículo 101.1 de la Constitución admite pocas dudas: “Las Cámaras y sus Comisiones pueden reclamar la presencia de los miembros del Gobierno”.
