General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

El empresario Julio Martínez Martínez ha ratificado este martes ante el juez José Luis Calama, instructor del caso Plus Ultra en la Audiencia Nacional, el escrito que envió el lunes al magistrado para señalar a José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero como la persona que “marcaba los pasos a seguir” en las gestiones que desembocaron en el rescate de 53 millones de euros que la compañía aérea recibió del Gobierno de Pedro Sánchez tras la pandemia de coronavirus. Varias fuentes presentes en el interrogatorio inciden en que el imputado, que ha declarado durante cerca de tres horas tras imprimir un giro de guion a su estrategia y ofrecerse a “colaborar” con la justicia, ha implicado al expresidente en los trabajos para la aerolínea, pero ha sostenido que él no sabe si el antiguo jefe del Ejecutivo intermedió ante alguien para agilizar la ayuda. La ministra portavoz, Elma Saiz, ha reiterado este martes la confianza del Gobierno en la presunción de inocencia del expresidente socialista José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. “La actuación del Gobierno de España en el rescate de Plus Ultra fue correcta”, ha insistido en la rueda de prensa posterior al Consejo de Ministros. También la exvicepresidenta del Gobierno y secretaria general del PSOE andaluz, María Jesús Montero, ha asegurado este martes que mantiene su confianza en el expresidente del Gobierno José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero y ha dicho que las nuevas acusaciones contra él en el caso Plus Ultra responden a “estrategias” de las defensas de otros acusados. Montero se ha referido así a los escritos presentados ante el juez ayer por Julio Martínez Martínez, socio de la consultora Análisis Relevante y amigo del expresidente del Gobierno, y por los directivos de Plus Ultra, en los que involucraban a Zapatero en las gestiones para el rescate de la aerolínea durante la pandemia. Martínez ha declarado hoy ante el juez en la Audiencia Nacional. Mientras, el Gobierno volverá a llevar este martes al Consejo de Ministros la misma senda de déficit para los Presupuestos Generales del Estado (PGE) de 2027 que tumbó el Congreso el pasado martes, con 178 votos en contra, y se votará de nuevo en la Cámara Baja en el Pleno del 23 de julio. El futuro penal de José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero tiene nombre propio. El empresario Julio Martínez Martínez, administrador de la consultora que pagó durante cinco años al expresidente del Gobierno, declara este martes ante el juez de la Audiencia Nacional José Luis Calama, después de contradecir por escrito la versión que dio Zapatero ante el instructor, en la que se desvinculó del rescate público de la aerolínea Plus Ultra aprobado en Consejo de Ministros en 2021. “Yo no he ejercido ninguna influencia en el rescate de Plus Ultra [...] eso es una verdad incuestionable”, sustuvo el expresidente. En un escrito en el que el empresario muestra su disposición a “colaborar”, Martínez Martínez asegura que el exlíder socialista era quien “marcaba los pasos a seguir” en esa operación.
