General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

El Gobierno salva por ahora la quita autonómica pero no avanza con los Presupuestos
El Congreso se fue de vacaciones este jueves con un maratoniano pleno cuya conclusión se presta a la ambivalencia del vaso medio lleno o medio vacío. Tras un periodo de sesiones en la cuerda floja por la creciente hostilidad de una mayoría de la Cámara, el Gobierno pudo completar un balance vistoso: se aprobaron tres leyes, dos decretos leyes —uno de ellos, el que prolonga las ayudas y rebajas fiscales para paliar los efectos del conflicto bélico en Oriente Próximo— y una reforma del Reglamento de la Cámara. También logró que el proyecto para la quita de la deuda autonómica salvase el primer trámite del pleno, al rechazar Junts las enmiendas del PP y de Vox que pretendían devolver el texto al Ejecutivo. Pero al mismo tiempo el Gobierno de coalición constató que sigue pareciendo misión imposible aprobar los primeros Presupuestos de la legislatura cuando esta entra ya en su recta final. Seguir leyendo

El Congreso avala la jubilación parcial del personal laboral de las Administraciones públicas
El Gobierno aprobó el 29 de junio las condiciones para que las Administraciones públicas puedan contratar a empleados relevistas que sustituyan al personal laboral que quiera acogerse a la jubilación parcial. Así, esos empleados públicos al final de sus carreras pueden acogerse a la jubilación parcial, normalmente anticipadas, porque les cubre un relevista. La norma fue aprobada por el Consejo de Ministros como un decreto ley, así que necesitaba ser avalada por el Congreso, respaldo recibido este martes. La abstención del PP ha permitido la convalidación de la medida, que ha obtenido 1677 votos a favor, 37 en contra -Vox y Podemos- y 144 abstenciones.Seguir leyendo

La cuenta atrás ya resuena en el juicio del caso Kitchen. La vista oral sobre el espionaje al extesorero popular Luis Bárcenas, que arrancó en la Audiencia Nacional el pasado 6 de abril, se encuentra inmersa en su recta final con la fase de exposición de las conclusiones de las defensas. Este miércoles, los abogados de Jorge Fernández Díaz y Francisco Martínez, respectivos número uno y dos del Ministerio del Interior con el Gobierno de Mariano Rajoy, desarrollaron ante el tribunal sus alegatos finales y evidenciaron cómo sus estrategias se han alineado para tratar de exculparse. “Estamos ante una operación de inteligencia, no ante una operación parapolicial”, incidió el letrado del exministro, pese a que Fernández Díaz niega directamente haber tenido cualquier conocimiento sobre Kitchen. “Se trató de una operación de inteligencia lícita”, ahondó el defensor de Martínez, que obvió, por su parte, referirse a los SMS que implicaron al exministro. La Comunidad de Madrid se encuentra en alerta máxima por tres incendios forestales diferentes que, al cierre de esta edición, seguían azotando el territorio.
