General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

La Comunidad de Madrid compra un ático de lujo en Chamberí para que lo use Ayuso como “oficina” temporal
La Comunidad de Madrid ha comprado un ático de 485 metros cuadrados en Chamberí, una de las zonas más caras de la capital, para que lo use la presidenta Isabel Díaz Ayuso “durante la rehabilitación de la Real Casa de Correos, cuyos trabajos comenzarán en agosto”, según le ha respondido este martes una portavoz a EL PAÍS. La noticia se conoce tres meses y medio después de la adquisición del piso y solo después de que este diario planteara la pregunta tras descubrir la compraventa, que aparece en el Registro de la Propiedad.Seguir leyendo

La presidenta de la Comunidad, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, tenía previsto comparecer este miércoles para dar cuenta de la peor crisis de incendios que ha vivido la región madrileña y anunciar un paquete de medidas tendentes a paliar los daños de los afectados. Así, en rueda de prensa en la sede del Ejecutivo autonómico, la dirigente popular ha desgranado el plan Reconstrucción, que incluye ayudas de millones de euros destinadas tanto a particulares como a autónomos o a entes locales. El acto ha coincidido con la publicación por parte de este periódico de que su Ejecutivo ha comprado un ático de lujo de Chamberí para su destino de “oficina” temporal mientras se acometen una serie de obras de reforma en el Palacio de Gobierno de la Puerta del Sol. A preguntas de los periodistas, Ayuso ha defendido la limpieza de la operación de compra del inmueble para hacer “reuniones temporales” mientras duren los trabajos de mejora de las instalaciones en Sol, de los que no se había informado. Aunque, eso sí, la dirigente popular ha usado un tono desafiante, se ha presentado como una víctima de una campaña de “desprestigio” en medio de la gestión de la crisis de los fuegos que asolan la comunidad y no ha querido aclarar algunas cuestiones cruciales.Seguir leyendo

En las imágenes que llegan estos días de Ceuta se ve a jóvenes marroquíes abrazados a sus mantas rojas, quizá tumbados sobre ellas después de extenuantes horas de nado para alcanzar la costa española. Esas cobijas son de la Cruz Roja, una organización que presta la primera ayuda que reciben esos muchachos, algunos con las fuerzas ya muy mermadas y necesidades inmediatas de apoyo médico. Ceuta ha decretado emergencia por la entrada de más de 1.000 personas en una sola semana, un repunte veraniego clásico que algunos atribuyen en esta ocasión a un efecto llamada tras la sentencia del Tribunal Supremo del 8 de julio, que impide la devolución en caliente de estas personas si han llegado por sus propios medios sin vulnerar los elementos de contención migratoria, como las vallas que separan un país de otro. José Javier Sánchez Espinosa (Granada, 60 años), responsable de Migraciones de la Cruz Roja Española, quita hierro a esta situación, o quizá se lo pone, cuando dice: “En Ceuta llevamos un año recibiendo llegadas”. Más de 400 menús diarios frescos para los evacuados por los incendios
