General Information

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. It had a population of over 3.4 million in the city proper in 2025, and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.8 million. Madrid is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), after Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, after Paris. The municipality covers an area of 605.77 km2 (233.89 sq mi). Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula at about 660 m (2,170 ft) above mean sea level. The capital city of both Spain and the surrounding autonomous community of Madrid, it is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

Los incendios de Madrid y Ávila afectan ya a 45.000 hectáreas y obligan a evacuar o confinar a más de 88.500 personas
Los incendios forestales que afectan ya a 45.000 hectáreas y han obligado a evacuar o confinar a más de 88.500 personas en la provincia de Ávila y la Comunidad de Madrid continúan activos y sin controlar. El viento complica por tercer día consecutivo las labores de extinción y la jornada del sábado fue difícil. El presidente del Gobierno, Pedro Sánchez, advertía de que la situación sigue siendo compleja: “No sabemos cuál va a ser la evolución del viento, pese a que las temperaturas hayan bajado”, señalaba por la mañana desde el puesto de mando avanzado en el municipio madrileño de Cenicientos (2.152 habitantes), que tuvo que desalojarse de urgencia por el avance de las llamas y se trasladó a la localidad vecina de Navalcarnero. La presidenta autonómica, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, calificó la situación como “totalmente inédita, nunca vista”. Palabras como “único” y “muy complicado” se repitieron durante todo el día. Seguir leyendo

El ministro del Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, ha reconocido desde Navaluenga (Ávila) que este sábado “no ha sido un día positivo” en la lucha contra el fuego debido a las difíciles condiciones meteorológicas, aunque ha subrayado que los incendios “no han ido a más” gracias al trabajo de la UME, los bomberos, las brigadas forestales y los medios aéreos. El ministro ha advertido que la noche “no va a ser sencilla” pero la situación “puede mejorar ligeramente” el domingo. El Ministerio del Interior ha ampliado a la provincia de Toledo el ámbito territorial de la declaración de emergencia de interés nacional por los incendios. Este nivel ya se estableció el jueves en la Comunidad de Madrid y Ávila, donde el fuego ya ha afectado a más de 45.000 hectáreas. El jefe de la UME, el teniente general Francisco Javier Marcos Izquierdo, ha explicado que gracias al trabajo de los bomberos los incendios de Madrid y Ávila solo se han unido “con un frente discontinuo muy pequeño”.Seguir leyendo

El amago de bronca entre algunos miembros del Gobierno y la Comunidad de Madrid a propósito del gran incendio en la sierra sur de la región se acalló este sábado. Pedro Sánchez e Isabel Díaz Ayuso coincidieron a primera hora en la reunión del comité de coordinación de la emergencia celebrada en el puesto de mando de la localidad de Cenicientos, antes de que tuviese que ser desalojado por la proximidad de las llamas. A su llegada, el presidente del Gobierno saludó con frialdad a la jefa de la comunidad madrileña. Luego, Ayuso no quiso comparecer ante los medios junto a Sánchez, según comentaron fuentes de La Moncloa, en contra de lo que sí hicieron en ocasiones similares otros barones del PP como el andaluz Juan Manuel Moreno o el gallego Alfonso Rueda.
